Solar Pergola in Barcelona inaugurated

  • Phönix SonnenStrom AG makes solar contribution to the World Forum of Culture

Sulzemoos/Barcelona, 13.05.2004 / On 9th May 2004 Spanish King Juan Carlos officially opened the World Forum of Culture in Barcelona, which five million visitors are expected to visit by its close on 26th September 2004. On 4th May 2004, the newest landmark of the city – the Solar Pergola with a rated peak power of 444 kilowatts located at the site of the Forum – was connected to the electricity grid. About 100 guests and press representatives attended the ceremony in the Catalan capital. Lord Mayor Dr. Juan Clos and Deputy Lord Mayor Inma Mayol expressed their delight at this first solar electricity system in a city district which has been especially rejuvenated for the Forum. Amongst the guests at the inauguration was Dr. Murray Cameron, Member of the Board of Phönix SonnenStrom AG responsible for international business, and Vice-President of the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA).

The Solar Pergola has been developed in the context of a European Union Project, EUPRES. Phönix SonnenStrom AG – as the only non-Spanish company in the project consortium – was responsible for supporting the design phase, advising on the tendering and ensuing technical evaluation processes, as well as providing technical know-how on the development of the monitoring concept. With this high-profile project Phönix SonnenStrom AG not only demonstrates its expertise in international photovoltaics projects but also its commitment to developing the large potential of theAbout Phönix SonnenStrom AG:

The Solar Pergola consists of 2,668 monocrystalline modules. The surface area of the pergola measures 112 by 50 metres - approximately equivalent to the size of a football pitch. With a height of up to 50 metres the pergola, besides delivering environmentally-friendly electricity, also serves to provide shade for the visitors to the Forum. “The view from underneath and that from the top of the pergola is amazing” according to Manfred Baechler, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Phönix SonnenStrom AG during his visit to the site one week prior to the official opening – “the Solar Pergola will be the attraction of the World Forum of Culture and, as such, will bring solar electricity technology closer to a very broad audience. We are extremely proud to have contributed to this unique installation.“

A total of 1.3 megawatts of photovoltaic modules will be installed on the site, corresponding to the yearly electricity needs of about 1,000 inhabitants of Barcelona. Following the end of the World Forum of Culture, companies are expected to move into this newly renovated city district. A conference centre and hotels have already been built.

The goal of this major event is to promote dialogue on cultures. Debates and symposia on issues such as the road to peace and sustainable development will take place. Concert, theatre, music and dance performances, as well as exhibitions, are planned. A street festival is scheduled during the Forum with the aim of turning the capital of Catalonia into the cultural focus of the world.
